T Shirt Display Options: Using Solid Wood to Create a Natural Look

We’ve recently been writing a fair amount about t shirt display ideas and also about how retail wood displays are trending. If you missed our recent blog series entitled “Creating Impulse Sales with an Effective T Shirt Display,” you can check out Part I here and Part II here. It’s a logical place to start given that the barriers to entry are very low. It’s a way to get in the game quickly while also providing a way to get some market feedback on your product. Creating Impulse Sales with an Effective T Shirt Display- Part II

In Part I of this blog series, we discussed the rise of online t-shirt sales, the continued shift toward t-shirts as an impulse item, and the importance of creating an effective t shirt display to maximize impulse sales. We also reviewed 3 common but ineffective approaches to merchandising t-shirts. Our merchandising thesis applies well beyond the t-shirt category and should be considered within the overall context of the broader retail market.
 It’s hard not to notice that it’s been a rough few months for retail. Some segments of retail, like fast fashion, are simply brutal. Aeropostale, the once-mighty teen retailer, is the most recent casualty in that space. Sporting goods has also taken it on the chin with the impending demise of Sports Authority and Sports Chalet. One of the things these 3 retailers have in common is that they all sell t-shirts and apparel, albeit with somewhat different target customers. With the meteoric rise of online retailing and the competitive bloodbath in which many brick and mortar retailers find themselves, it got us thinking about how the landscape is changing and what it might mean for merchandising and selling apparel in general and t-shirts in particular. In today’s post we’d like to share a number of examples of how t-shirts can be merchandised effectively to drive impulse sales.

Creating Impulse Sales with an Effective T Shirt Display- Part I

You probably know the story of brothers Bert and John Jacobs who started a T-shirt business after graduating from college. They sold their t-shirts out of their van, in college dorms, and at street fairs. After 5 ½ years they had just $78 in the bank. It was at that point they decided that our country was in a national funk driven largely by negative media messaging. That insight led them to create a t-shirt with positive messaging: Life is Good. They printed 48 Life is Good T-shirts, took them to a street fair, and sold out within the first hour. They went on to build a $100 million company that sells t-shirts, hats, apparel and other items online and in 4500 retail stores. Yes, the T-shirt industry is big business. In this first of a two-part series, we’ll discuss why in-store merchandising of t-shirts is becoming increasingly important.  We’ll also review a number of conventional but relatively ineffective ways to display t-shirts. Then in our next blog, we’ll share what we think are better, more visual appealing more ways to display t-shirts, and we’ll discuss how the right t shirt display can help to drive impulse sales.
