How Will Trump’s Proposed Tariffs Impact the POP Display Industry?

Posted by Jim Hollen on Apr 10, 2018 2:30:00 PM

This is a question we were asked often over the last week or two. The question came from customers, our factories in China, and our own employees. The initial announcement by the Trump Administration that it would impose a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports sent shock waves throughout the financial markets and sparked fears of a trade wars. The tariffs were designed to strengthen the U.S. steel industry and prevent predatory pricing by foreign manufacturers. The China steel industry, for example, has engaged in a long-standing practice of producing high volumes of raw steel materials in order to achieve production efficiencies and then “dumping” or exporting the materials to the U.S. at below-market prices, making it difficult for the U.S. steel industry to compete. So, the initial tariffs were aimed, in part, at curbing this practice and leveling the playing field. These tariffs are confined to steel and aluminum raw material imports and do not apply to finished goods. Therefore, we don’t expect them to have a significant impact on the POP display business.

Posted by Jim Hollen on Mar 30, 2017 2:30:00 PM

One of the most effective places for POP displays is the countertop. While countertop space is generally considered premium space in a retail store, if you can get it, it can be a very effective location to merchandise your product. Getting countertop space near the cash register is a home run since checkout areas get the highest amount of traffic in most stores.

POP Display Conversion and Store Design

Posted by Jim Hollen on Jan 31, 2017 2:30:00 PM

When it comes to POP display marketing, “the squeaky wheel gets the oil,” is the big take-away.

Why?
Consider this: 2,473 shoppers were surveyed in a study of supermarkets by Citeman Network. Thirty-eight percent of the shoppers responded that, when they entered a supermarket, they always purchased an item they had never bought before. Why? Because the item was prominently displayed.  This speaks volumes about the importance of Point of Purchase marketing.

Combine this with the fact that, according to stasticbrain.com, the average American’s attention span has dropped from 12 seconds in the year 2000 to just 8.5 seconds in 2015 and, again, you can see that POP marketing has become not just a great marketing tool, but a real necessity. POP displays—in the form of last minute attention-getters and impulse strategies, are now the key to addressing ever-shortening attention spans. Taking convenience and combining it with an impulsive marketing strategy, creates a win-win for everyone, particularly when a certain brand or discount item is highlighted.

POP Display Ideas for Gloves at Retail

Posted by Jim Hollen on Nov 29, 2016 7:15:06 PM

When it comes to merchandising, gloves are no different than most other apparel accessory items. As with other apparel products, the right POP display can make all the difference in achieving sales success. There are many types of gloves, including ski gloves, gardening gloves, work gloves, dress gloves, etc. In addition, gloves are sold in many different types of retail stores, including department stores, mass market retailers, sporting goods stores, hardware stores, and specialty stores. Given the range of glove products and retailers in which they ae sold, the POP displays used to merchandise gloves vary considerably from a design standpoint.
Most gloves tend to be seasonal items. The seasonal nature of gloves has two key implications: (1) They tend to be merchandised on freestanding displays since it is more difficult to build them into a plan-o-gram for a shorter selling season, and (2) The retail displays need to be cost effective given they will be in stores for a shorter period of time, or the display needs to be flexible enough to be able to be reconfigured to merchandise other products in the off season.
Let’s take a look at 7 examples of glove displays we have designed. Our objective is not only to provide inspiration for glove displays but also to share ideas that may be adapted for apparel or other types of displays.
